"M" is for Macaron

This is Day 13 for the
Blogging from A to Z Challenge
for 2013.

Today's topic is the macaron - not the coconut confection we have in North America (a macaroon) but the colourful creation of French patisserie Ladurée.

The French macaron is a delightful sandwich of ganache filling between two meringue-based cookies. They are prepared in a variety of colours and flavours.

Ladurée now has six shops in the Paris area, including Versailles and Charles de Gaulle Airport, and many more around the world. The first North American location will soon be opening in New York City.

We visited the original patisserie and tea salon on rue Royale, near Place de la Madeleine.

When you first walk through the door you arrive in the patisserie. The display cases are filled with exquisite baked goods.

To the right of the patisserie is the small 1862 tea salon with its original wood panelling and painted ceiling depicting fairies and angels. The menu features a tempting list of options. We chose the sampler of macarons: pistachio, blackberry, raspberry and caramel.

You'll find these colourful treats all over France and now they're available around the world.

But it was a special experience to enjoy a macaron in the place where it all began, Ladurée on rue Royale in Paris.

  1. I've tried them once and honestly I didn't have the "wow effect", maybe the ones I had were just a cheap copy ;) well I guess I should try Ladureé next week (going to Paris for a business trip)
